**NEW YORK** – The 2024 Los Angeles Dodgers, brimming with talent yet plagued by injuries, had spent the entire season battling through adversity.
When it came time to secure a championship, they did it once again, overcoming a five-run deficit and utilizing seven relievers— including starting pitcher Walker Buehler—to complete 23 outs in a thrilling 7-6 comeback victory over the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday night.
This win marked the Dodgers' eighth title in franchise history, their first since the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, and their first in a full season since 1988. They became the first team to use more than seven pitchers to clinch a championship.
"We're obviously flexible, but there's so much love in the clubhouse that won this game today," Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts said. "It was love, it was patience. "I'm proud of us and happy for us."
Their comeback was fueled by a series of misplays in the fifth inning. Aaron Judge misplayed a flare hit right at him, while Anthony Volpe’s throw to third base went wide on an attempted force out. Anthony Rizzo fielded a slow roller but had no one to flip to at first. With two outs and the bases loaded, Freddie Freeman delivered a two-run single, and Teoscar Hernandez followed with a two-run double, leveling the score at 5-5.
